Source / Processing / Story:

Sulawesi, formerly known as Celebes, is one of the four larger Sunda Islands of Indonesia, covering an area of 174,600 km2. The island is surrounded by Borneo to the west, by the Philippines to the north, by Maluku to the east and by Flores and Timor to the south. The famous coffee area of Tana Toraja is located at an altitude of 900m - 1,250m above sea level, close to the town Rantepao, which is the cultural center of famous Toraja ethnic group.

The semi-washed Arabica coffee is produced by small local communities, living deeply rooted with their indigenous traditions. Torajans are renowned for their elaborate funeral rites, burial sites carved into rocky cliffs, massive peaked-roof traditional houses known as tongkonan, and colorful wood carvings. Toraja funeral rites are important social events, usually attended by hundreds of people and lasting for several days.

Coffee was the first significant cash crop produced in Toraja, and was introduced in the mid 19th century, changing the local economy towards commodity production for external markets and gaining an excellent reputation for quality in the international market.

Cup Profile: Overall sweet and fruity, almost natural-like, spicey, with notes of dark berries.
