The Baragwi Farmers’ Co-operative Society consists of Muchagara, Kagongo(where this coffee was processed), Ruambiti, Nyanja, Kianyaga, Guama, Gachami, Kianjiru, Kariru, Githiururi, Thimu and Karumandi factories and has approx. 1‘500 ha under coffee. Kagongo factory is located approx. 1’550 meters above sea level. The area receives approx. 1’400-1’700 mm of rainfall per annum. The area has deep red volcanic soils, rich in organic matter. Timely and selective hand picking is carried out. Cherry is then delivered to wet mill the same day it is picked. Cherry sorting is carried out at the wet mill prior to the pulping. Red ripe cherries are separated from underripes, overripes and foreign matter. Processing utilizes clean river water (wet processing) that is recirculated before being disposed into seepage pits. Sun drying on raised African beds is done before delivery of the coffee to the dry mill for further processing. The coffee was hulled and graded by size and density and then bagged. The coffee is then sold at the Nairobi Coffee Exchange auctions.
